PRESS STATEMENT Labour Leaders Charged To Rescue Lagos State Labour Party

Organized Trade Unions under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have been enjoined to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in Lagos State Labour Party.

In a press statement issued in Lagos today and signed by its Vice Chairman, Comrade Tony Masha, the Lagos State Labour Party regretted that the Labour Party which was formed by the two Labour Centres as the last hope to bring succour to Nigerian people is being derailed in Lagos state by unscrupulous persons.

It regretted that an indiscretion of the National Working Committee of Labour Party in gathering a motley crowd of about 25 persons who are not known to existing Labour Party in Lagos state and who know nothing whatsoever about Labour Party democratic culture and constituted them as Caretaker Committee members in Lagos state had created a scenario where the noble ideals of the founding fathers of the party are desecrated by transactional politicians.

"We started to reorganize Labour Party in Lagos state since 2018 and we have been meeting at the NLC office in Yaba, the Secretariat of Labour Party in Lagos state and we have also been mobilizing members as well as inaugurating Local Government Areas Executive Committees elected by members themselves. 

"But since the momentum induced by the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in May 2022, the Labour Party has been attracting all manner of persons, some of whom joined the party for ulterior motives including the intention to demobilize and demoralize rank and file members of the Party and through that process disorganize the party in Lagos state."

He added that since election campaigns had started, it had become imperative for Labour Leaders of the two Labour Centres to liaise with the National Working Committee of Labour Party to ensure that a democratic and inclusive Caretaker Committee is set up to steer the affairs of Labour Party in Lagos state pending when Party Congress would be held especially when the tenure of the illegally imposed Caretaker had expired since the 18th of August, 2022.

The statement emphasized that under no circumstances should an individual be allowed to scuttle the democratic structures already operating in Local Government Areas and Wards in the State by dismantling such existing democratically elected Party leaders at those layers in order to handpick his friends and relatives to replace them.

"We, therefore, urge our teeming members and the general public to disregard a statement circulating in the social media that individuals will be unveiled to replace democratically elected party leaders at the Local Government Areas and Wards because that is an aberration. 

"History will not forgive us if we stand aloof and allow Labour Party in Lagos state to be hijacked by fifth columnist because if they succeed in Lagos state, they will spread their invidious tentacles to other states of the Federation and ultimately kill Labour Party. This is why the NLC and the TUC at the national level should step in now to bring sanity to Lagos State Labour Party before it is too late, " the statement emphasized.

Once again, the Labour Party Campaign Organisation is inundated with calls on the purported replacement of Chief Sola Ebiseni, our Governorship candidate, with Ayo Olorunfemi less than 24 hours to the Ondo State Governorship election tomorrow. Contrary to the false report, the candidacy of Ebiseni was the decision of the Party presided over by the National Working Committee led by Julius Abure of which Ayo Olorunfemi is a member after the latter, who was a placeholder, voluntarily withdrew his candidacy backed with sworn affidavit, an undisputed fact confirmed by the Courts.
