Group commends F.G over the 29 man committee on minimum wage and advocates for price control on goods....

The Project Change Nigeria Advocacy is commending the Federal Government for constituting the 29-man committee which is set to look into the minimum wage issue in the country. In a communique issued on Thursday, the group however advised that the government should also set an effective policy for price control for goods and services in other to curb rising inflation in the country economy.... The provision of relevant infrastructure to ease the burden of trade and movement of goods and personnel was also emphasised, as it is seen as a necessary tool for economic development.

Ekiti State Government Disrupts Moji Olaiya’s Canada Burial Arrangement

Following the announcement of Nollywood actress, Moji Olaiya’s death, there have been several controversies regardin her burial as the family wanted her buried according to Muslim rites but her daughter, Adun declined demanding her mother’s body be returned to Nigeria. Recall that the 42-year-old actress had died at a medical facility in Canada and the burial had been scheduled to hold on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 4pm in Canada but the Ekiti State Government has stepped in and aborted the plans. The burial of the Nollywood actress which was earlier slated for yesterday has since been cancelled as the state government in a last minute intervention demanded the body to be ferried to Nigeria. Acceptance Rate of Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals in Nigeria On The Rise – NOIPolls

NOIPolls, the premier organization for country specific polling services in West Africa, has released a Social Perception Survey on Lesbian, Gays and Bisexual Rights showing an increase in acceptance rate of Lesbian, Gays and Bisexuals in Nigeria. Commissioned by The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs), a non-profit organization working to protect the rights of sexual minorities, the report showed a rise in family acceptance from 11 percent in 2015 to 13 percent in 2017.  Findings also show that 39 percent of Nigerians now say that Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual persons should be allowed to have access to public services, a 9 per cent increase from 30 per cent of respondents in 2015. One of the highlights of the report was the fact that 17 per cent of respondents answered in affirmative when asked if they know someone who is Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual- a family member, friend, or someone within their locality. Nurse lied over drugs he gave Adeleke, says Police forensic expert

The coroner inquest into the death of the Late Senator Isiaka Adeleke sitting in Osogbo was on Friday told that the Nurse who treated the former Governor of Osun wasn’t truthful about the quantity of drugs and how it was administered on the deceased before his death. The Coroner also heard that the Adeleke family did not order for the autopsy carried out on the deceased. Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Solaja who examined the deceased for autopsy, said he only acted on the orders of Coroner Dorcas Ajiboye. Aderibigbe, who claimed to be a Chief Nursing Officer at Comprehensive Health Centre, Edunabon, Osun State, had during his evidence before the Coroner Inquest set up by the Osun State Government to probe Adeleke’s death yesterday (Thursday) denied administering Gentamicine on the senator while treating him for gout. Four policemen arrested for handcuffing bus driver to police van in Edo

The Edo state police command have arrested four policemen attached to the Esigie Police Division over a viral video showing some police officers in the state handcuffing a bus driver, 38 year old Kester Odozi, on a bus and driving around with him. The four policemen were on Thursday made to face orderly room trial. Confirming their arrest, the AIG, zone 5 in Edo state, Abubakar Adamu, described the conduct of the policemen as unprofessional and does not in anyway depict the ethics and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.  He said the police has started an investigation into the matter and that the police officers will be punished if the are found guilty.

Mercy Aigbe: Lady sues actress, demand N500 million

The lady that allegedly caused the crash of Mercy Aigbe’s marriage with her husband, Lanre Gentry, Opemititi Ajayi, has sued the actress, and Nigerian frontline blogger Linda Ikeji for defamation of character. Lawyers to Miss Ajayi, Afolabi Fashanu & Co wrote both the blogger, and the actress, demanding N500 million over the defamation of character of its client. She is asking both parties to do a retraction of their story and tender an unreserved apology to their client. They are asking for the sum of five hundred million naira as fee for damages caused to her reputation by their publication. The lawyer claims that her client had suffered hatred, contempt and is now being shunned by close friends and business associates. Thief Caught On Arik Air Flight From Lagos To Abuja

A suspected thief was caught red handed on Arik Air flight from Lagos to Abuja this morning stealing money from a passenger's bag and transferring to his own. According to reports, this has been a common occurrence but when they catch them, the thieves would claim, "sorry, I thought it was my bag..." "Arik Air actually had someone pose like a regular passenger seated far behind pretending to be asleep. That person saw everything. This time though, the spy let them complete the transfer before making his own move. They were caught literally in the act". The police were alerted as soon as the incident happened on air and the thief was arrested on arrival.

Made-in-Nigeria foods, drinks must be served in State House – Osinbajo

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has ordered that Nigeria foods and drinks must be served at state banquets in a  bid to promote made-in-Nigeria products. Osinbajo said this on Thursday at an interactive session he had with top government officials on the ease of doing business at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said the government would work out incentives for performance by building a reward system that punishes malfeasance and that preference must be given to indigenous providers of goods and services to strengthen the system. Osinbajo said, “I agree that a system of rewarding performance, and punishing malfeasance is key. Police Arrest Human Parts Dealer In Kebbi

The Police Command in Kebbi has arrested a 37-year-old man, Danbaba Umar, in Kaoje, Bagudo Local Government Area, who specialises in exhuming corpses from graves for ritual purposes. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ibrahim Kabiru, told newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday that the arrest of the suspect followed a tip-off. He said Umar was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. at the Kaoje graveyard while attempting to exhume a male corpse for ritual purposes. He said the suspect confessed to the crime and revealed that he was sent to commit the act by one, Malam Muhammadu from Sokoto State. A father of ten, the suspect told newsmen that he was a professional driver who was transporting wood planks from Zaria to Sokoto for sale prior to his recruitment for the criminal act. Umar said inadequate money to cater for his family compelled him to engage in the crime.

The Kogi State High Court sitting in Kabba has sacked Alhaji Ganiyu Isa from the stool of Olu of Odokoro-Gbede in Ojumu Local Government Area of of Kogi State. The court also declared Mallam Busiriyu Aliu as the substantive Olu of Odokoro-Gbede. Delivering the judgment, the presiding judge, Justice A.B. Akogu, declared that the nomination and installation of Ganiyu Isah as Olu of Odokoro-Gbedde by the second, third and fourth defendants in the case was not in line with the judgment of the State High Court, Lokoja, dated 13th May, 2016 which empowered Mallam Busiriyu Aliu to be installed as the Olu of Odokoro. According to him, the nomination of the 30th March 2011 by the Omoaguni Elewonunibi family which produced Mallam Busiriyu Aliu as the candidate for the seat still stands, hence it should be upheld; noting that the action of the second, third and fourth defendants is wrongful in nominating and installing Ganiyu Isah as the Olu of Odokoro. Female bomber kills soldiers at military checkpoint in Borno

Two soldiers have been killed in a suicide attack at a military checkpoint in Konduga, Borno State, the police said on Thursday. The female suicide bomber, according to a statement by the spokesman of the police in Borno state, Victor Isuku, detonated the explosive strapped on her at a military checkpoint just in front of an Internally Displaced Persons camp. Isuku said that the information received from Police in Konduga has it that on Wednesday, 17/5/17, at about 7:30 pm, a female suicide bomber detonated explosive strapped to her body at Mashimari by military checkpoint behind internally displaced persons camp at Konduga. The police spokesman said the woman was lost in the attack which claimed two soldiers. He said the scene of the crime was visited by team of EOD of the police. Isuku said normalcy has been restored even as the situation continued to be monitored.

Tragedy: Mother, 3 Children Burn To Death In Lagos Fire

Tragedy struck at Surulere area of Lagos at the early hours of Thursday as fire burnt a mother and her three children to death. The tragedy occurred at Dipo Olubi Street, Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. We gathered that several shops were also burnt in the inferno which left behind tales of weeping ad mourning. Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe confirmed the tragedy in a text message, saying that the mother and her three children were burnt to death in the inferno. He did not give details as to the cause of the fire. According to him: “An outbreak of fire involving shops at Dipo Olubi Street, Aguda, Surulere, consumes the lives of a mother and three children.”

Woman Burnt To Death In Ibadan Tanker Fire

The accident occurred about 11:30 am at Eleyele when the tank filled with 33,000 litres of diesel detached from the vehicle while ascending a hill. A witness, Mr. Lekan Durosaro, told The Nation that,the tank rolled over a Nissan Almera car coming behind and caught fire. The intensity of the fire reportedly made it difficult for rescuers to help the woman trapped in the car. The rescue team tried in vain to identify the woman.Sympathisers wailed as her remains were removed from the wreckage. The trailer driver and the motor boy fled the scene.Before fire fighters arrived, three buildings, including a church, Save and Serve Ministries, had been gutted. A Mazda car registered as Lagos LSR 208 EJ, parked in the compound of a former commissioner, was affected by the fire.The remains of the woman were taken to a mortuary. Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu said: “Our men have been sent to the accident scene.”

I will sign 2017 budget when satisfied with content – Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo will assent to the 2017 budget when he is satisfied with the content, his spokesperson said on Wednesday, in apparent reaction to a report that Information Minister Lai Mohammed said the government was unsure of who to sign the budget. Earlier on Wednesday, Vanguard newspaper had published a report entitled: “We don’t know who will sign 2017 budget – Lai Mohammed.” “It’s absolute rubbish,” said Mr. Mohammed, dismissing the report when contacted by PREMIUM TIMES. Coming shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari’s “medical follow-up” letter to the Senate had generated controversy, Nigerians started expressing concerns over the effectiveness of Mr. Osinbajo. A. Onyetenu of the federal High Court Osogbo on an Eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy and Money Laundering. The defendants however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. In vie w of their plea, prosecution counsel, Cosmos Ugwu prayed the court for a trial date and for the remand of the defendants in prison custody. He also informed the court that he was served a bail application this morning and needs time to respond.
