Nigeria in trouble as Chad withdraw from current 2017 Afcon qualifiers, handed hefty fine and ban

Chad has withdrawn from the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers due to the economic situation in the country, and will not honour the return leg against Tanzania on March 28, according to Chad Football Association Secretary General,Mahamoud.

According to the regulations of CAF, the teams in Group G have been reduced to three, Egypt, Nigeria and Tanzania, and previous matches against Chad will no longer be taken into account in the ranking.

The withdrawal means that Chad's group results will be nullified, with leaders Egypt – who initially thrashed the outsiders 5-1 away from home – now on four points instead of seven.

Second-placed Nigeria have been deducted three points as well following their 2-0 victory over Chad, with the Super Eagles now on two points. Tanzania are also on two.

The withdrawal of Chad has put Nigeria in a precarious position as a loss to Egypt on Tuesday will see them knocked out of the qualifying race.

Based on the regulations of CAF, the 13 group winners and the two best overall runners-up will qualify for the tournament, but a group with three teams is not considered when determining the best runners-up.

Egypt host Nigeria on Tuesday at Alexandria's Borg El-Arab Stadium, as a win for the Pharaohs would put them on the brink of qualification for the 2017 finals in Gabon.
