Covid19: Lagos State PDP demands transparency from Lagos state government
The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Lagos State, Adedeji Doherty has demanded transparency from the Lagos state government on the management of Covid19 in the state.
Doherty advised the government to come clean and give a detailed account of activities to Lagosians. Doherty expressed his concern over what he called the suicidal secrecy.
He observed that the government has refused to disclose the number of tests done in Lagos, the number of medical personnel, the number of beds, the capacity of isolation centres and the current occupancy. He said he had heard from several sources that the state was currently turning away confirmed Covid19 patients and telling them that the isolation centres are at capacity.
In addition he said that the state has not disclosed how much has been donated, budgeted and spent so far on the management of the pandemic.
Doherty called on the private sector, philanthropists and other donors to stop giving COVID19 support to the Lagos State government but instead give directly to the most vulnerable citizens either directly or through estate/neighbourhood committees who seem to be doing this already with their own resources. He also said that it can be done through traditional Rulers (Obas, Baale’s and community leaders) who should work with recognised NGO’s like he the Red Cross who will be saddled with the responsibility of educating the public as well as making sure that the necessary pallatives get to the actual beneficiaries and are not hijacked by greedy politicians and public servants.
Doherty said: “Lagos State is a Rich state, as a matter of fact it is the richest state in the West African sub region. Richer than some countries. This can also be reaffirmed by the fact that It receives a minimum of about N30billion every month from its IGR and the federation account. There has been one political party ruling the state for over 20 years.
It is very embarrassing to see the same billionaire Lagos State receiving handouts at this critical time when it should be a donor to other states in the country, many of who do not have the advantage of being a former state capital and so beneficiary of free federal infrastructure and resources which helped Lagos attain the status it boasts of today.
Doherty continued: “It is not surprising but it is indeed thoroughly shameful that the APC led government could not provide a decent isolation center or even basic COVID-19 equipment such as personal protective equipment.”
Engr Doherty also advised the governor to have a rethink on the partial lifting of the lockdown as the level of testing was not enough to determine if Lagos had reached its peak.
He was also worried about some areas of compliance being expected from the public and suggested they might not be feasible. An example was the immediate mandatory use of face masks by all citizens in Lagos, which we know is not readily available and would have skyrocketed in price due to the sudden announcement by governor. He also said the 60% capacity in public transport was unreasonable and would only increase the risk of infections.
Doherty also warned that the cloth face masks do not provide the level of safety required to prevent transmission of a virus and so the government should clearly state this in all their announcements to avoid a false sense of safety.
He thanked the frontline health workers once again for their sacrifice and prayed for the repose of the souls of all those who had died and a quick recovery for the thousands currently affected
