Obafemi Awolowo University student commits suicide over poor grade

A 16-year old 100-level student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mercy Afolaranmi, has committed suicide, an official said. According to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, Miss Afolaranmi, poisoned herself. Students and a neighbour close to the deceased also said she killed herself due to poor grade. “We got a call that one of our students took poison,” Mr. Oyatokun said. “We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took.” A neighbour, Bimpe Oni, in an interview, said Miss Afolaranmi, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday, after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.” Mrs. Oni said the late student committed suicide because of “emotional pressure.” A student, Aisha, who was Miss Afolaranmi’s colleague in the Faculty of Science, said the deceased ha...

Drugs and other crimes: Lagos Police Command focuses on hotels, night clubs, others

According to a press statement signed by Folarin Famous-Cole, Public Relations Officer, the Lagos State Police Command has warned operators of night clubs, beaches, hotels, bars, lounges, among others in the State to henceforth put internal security measures in place to discourage drug abuse, drug peddling and other criminal activities in their establishments in the overall best interest of their businesses and security of the State. Police invite Omisore over alleged attack on Late Isiaka Adeleke

The police have invited a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, over an alleged attack on Late Senator Isiaka Adeleke in the build-up to the governorship primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014. The late senator, who was a governorship candidate of the PDP shortly before the 2014 governorship election in Osun State, had accused Omisore and a former Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan and one Sogo Agboola of beating him up at a hotel where he had gone to meet officials of the PDP sent to conduct the primary election. Adeleke, who eventually defected to the All Progressives Congress ahead of the poll assisted Governor Rauf Aregbesola to win his second term while he (Adeleke) contested Osun West Senatorial Election and won. How suspected robbers rob distressed motorists while pretending to assist – Police

Detectives attached to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, Special Intelligence Response Team have arrested some men, who allegedly rob distressed motorists on the road, while pretending that they wanted to assist them. Investigators said that the gang, which uses a locally made gun, had penchant for going after exotic cars. They allegedly scout for victims around Kaduna and Jos expressways. Two among the gang members, ‎Ochuko Awasa and Gabriel Ibia, are said to be kingpins of the gang. The police said: “These two men are the ones that linked and connected every member of the gang.” Another gang member, Jethro Jammal, was alleged to have linked the gang to a receiver in Jos. Edo Police Arrest Kidnappers Who Killed Three Policemen, Abducted Ogba Zoo Boss

Four members of the gang that kidnapped Dr. Andy Ehanire, Managing Director of Ogba Zoo and Nature Park and Daisy Danjuma’s brother have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command. The suspects were arrested in Sapele and other communities in Delta State. It was also gathered that the kidnappers also collected N61 million ransom before he was released. Recall that gunmen shot dead three policemen last month after buying them beer before abducting. Dr. Ehanire, who is also a brother to the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, spent three weeks in the den of the kidnappers before he was released. The kidnappers collected N25 million and another $100,000. The sum of N800,000 was said to have been recovered from the wife of one of the suspects, who was also arrested for conspiracy. Nigerian govt confirms six new cases of Monkeypox

The federal government has confirmed six additional cases of Monkeypox. The cases are amongst those sent to the World Health Organisation’s laboratory in Dakar, Senegal, a statement by the Ministry of Health said Friday. The Minister of State for Health, Osagie Ehanire, said two cases each were confirmed in Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States, one each in Enugu State and the Abuja. They bring to nine the total number of Monkeypox cases so far confirmed in Nigeria. Three had earlier been confirmed on October 16. Mr. Ehanire said investigations were ongoing to establish whether the new cases emanated from Bayelsa where the outbreak started. Mr. Ehanire said as frightening as the manifestation of the ailment may seem, no fatality has been recorded to date. Meanwhile, there are 94 suspected cases reported from 11 states, namely Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory.
