OPEN LETTER: Abia community cries out to Abia and AkwaIbom state governments for help
The indigenes and residence of Ariam Osuigwe community in Abia state have sent a save our soul (SOS) appeal to both the Abia and Akwa Ibom state government, to save them from the incessant attacks from indigines of utunda community in Akwa Ibom state whom they share a common boundary with.
Investigations by an Advocacy group PROJECT CHANGE NIGERIA revealed that on daily basis lives and properties are being lost to a feud that was traced to land dispute that has gone unabated for decades.
A member of the group Miss Adaugo who is an indigene of Ariam Osuigwe narrated their ordeal thus:
*It is no news that Ariam osuigwe auto community and the indigenes of (ntuudan) ibibios are engaged in a serious war, killing each other, burning down houses and kidnapping people here and there. *
It all began, decades ago, when the ibibios suddenly migrated very close to a place, much closer to the people of Ariam.
At first they were friendly, they brought their farms produce to Ariam market to sell and later they started giving out there daughters out in marriage to the people of Ariam.
They lived in peace, not until they decided one day to start farming on the farm lands belonging to the people of Ariam.
Not only that they stole cassavas, corns and other items, not belonging to them; that was when the dispute all started.
In 2005, the ibibios waged a serious war with the Ariam people, lots of properties were destroyed, people were killed, most people went missing till today, they would sneak up on people on their farms and kill them, the ibibios raped both young and old women, brutality was the other of the day.
They committed lots of crime against God and man.
Each time, measures for settlement comes up they would want to claim what is not theirs for the taking.
One year later, both Abia state and Akwa Ibom state decided that part of these lands should be given to the soldiers to build barracks and station themselves, so that peace would be restored back, but the ibibios still came across to steal, kill & destroy.
Now, 2017, they are at it again, killing, kidnapping and destroying properties.
"I need the right authorities to look into this matter that have lingered and left a bitter taste in the mouths of the people of Ariam auto community, because they can no longer sit back and watch their friends, family, properties and loved ones been taken away from them by these blood thirsty ibibios" she added.
