For banning morning devotion in schools in Cross Rivers state, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Education, Anne Odey, has been suspended indefinitely. Odey’s suspension was communicated by Jude Ngaji, the State Security Adviser (SSA) to Governor Ben Ayade. Ngaji revealed to journalists in Calabar on Friday, that the state police commissioner, Henry Fadairo, had truly alerted the Education Ministry of a potential Boko Haram attack during early morning and afternoon devotions in schools. He said: “The governor has directed that the permanent secretary be suspended indefinitely while the ban on suspension of devotion has been lifted immediately. It is true that police got intelligence information that Boko Haram is planning to bomb schools during morning devotions and therefore directed authorities in the Ministry of Education to act fast. But the permanent secretary did not bother to refer to the governor or call for stakehol...

Image

When I returned from the Holy Land yesterday (Wednesday), I was told that Ekiti got N1.4bn whereas my wage bill per month is N2.6bn.”‎   Governor Fayose, however decried th...

Image

Image
Governor Ayo Fayose did the unexpected today after some restive youths at Iju, Ondo State barricaded a major road following the alleged killing of an Okada by a policeman..  The governor’s motorcade and other motorists were prevented from plying the route close to Iju/Itaogbolu police station where the rampaging youths had blocked the road with bonfire.  Governor Fayose came down from his car, walked up to the angry youths surrounded by his security aides as he thanked them for the respect accorded him saying he plies the road regularly and couldn’t have run away from them today because there was an issue.  He promised to get in touch with Ekiti State Police Commissioner who in turn will get in touch with Ondo CP and make sure the trigger happy policeman is dealt with according to the law.   The Governor later told them he’ll drop some “little cash” for “morning bread” to the admiration of the now calm youths who quickly looked for water...

Court of Appeal upholds Saraki’s trial by CCT

Image
The Court of Appeal on Friday morning upheld the trial of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Saraki had gone to the Court of Appeal to stop his trial by the CCT for failing to fully declare his assets as the Governor of Kwara State. But the Court of Appeal in a judgement delivered by Justice Moore Adumen, said the trial of Saraki by the CCT was in order. Adumen said the Tribunal was in the first instance misled into believing that the Federal High Court once ordered the stoppage of Saraki’s trial. The Court of Appeal also held that by virtue of Section 174(1) and (2), the absence of an Attorney General of the Federation does not stop Saraki’s trial. It held that the section justifies the filing of the charges against Saraki by M.S. Hassan, a staff of the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Pro-Biafra Leaders Are Criminals, Drug Dealers And Should Be Ignored – Obasanjo

Image
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has described those agitating for the Republic of Biafra as criminals, 419ners, drug dealers who should be ignored by the government. He stated this while granting an interview to PUNCH where he bore his mind on pro-Biafra agitations, Boko Haram war deadline, among other issues. According to Baba as he is fondly called, the pro-Biafra leaders are looking to extort money from Nigeria. He further said the Boko Haram war cannot end by December in apparent agreement with statements from General Yakubu Gowon. According to Obasanjo, the military can only have the upper hand in dealing with the insurgents and drastically reduce their nefarious activities. He said “Not as far as Biafra is concerned. We absorbed those we should absorb both into the civil service and into the military. Even those we didn’t absorb, who we initially regarded as being retired without benefit, later on we even gave them their benefits.” “Abandoned houses were retur...

Nigerian politicians are ‘Militicians’ – Jega

Image
Professor Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, has described Nigerian politicians as being too desperate during electioneering. Jega said Nigeria’s breed of politicians believe elections as a do or die affair, and as such, it must be captured by all means possible. The former INEC boss said this attitude is what usually leads to killing and maiming during election campaign periods. Jega said this in a lecture entitled, “Electoral reforms in Nigeria: Challenges and prospects,” which he delivered during the maiden edition of the University of Abuja Public Lecture Series. He said: “We must put the next four years to even better use by ensuring the implementation of those outstanding and very good recommendations of the ERC, which have not been acted upon; the completion of the outstanding amendments to the legal framework, as well as the bringing about of additional reform measures to deepen and consolidate our electoral democra...

‘We've been marginalised, but we won't secede’ – Ohanaeze Ndigbo

Image
The Secretary General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Joe Nwaorgu, has stated that the Ndigbo has no intentions of seceding from Nigeria. Nwaorgu condemned the violent activities and threats of the pro-Biafra activists that have become increasingly vociferous. The Ohanaeze leader said although it is true that the Ndigbo has been marginalised, secession and violence is not the answer. “We condemn the threats of violence issued by pro-Biafra activists. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not supporting violence. So, we don’t support the threats to destroy embassy buildings. Yes, there is marginalisation of the Igbo ethnic group in the President Muhammadu Buhari government but the threat of violence and secession is out of point. “We are not planning to secede. We are going to sort out the inequality issue with our fellow Nigerians. We are fighting for justice, equity and fair play. That is why we want the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference to be implemented.” “Man proposes, Go...

China abandons one-child policy

Image
With its population ageing fast, China today announced the  abandonment of  its hugely controversial one-child policy. The official Xinhua news agency said  all couples would be allowed two children. It cited a communique issued by the ruling Communist Party after a four-day meeting in Beijing to chart the course of the world’s second-largest economy over the next five years. The policy restricted most couples to only a single offspring, and for years authorities argued that it was a key contributor to China’s economic boom. But after years of strict, sometimes brutal enforcement by a government commission, China’s population — the world’s largest — is now ageing rapidly, gender imbalances are severe, and its workforce is shrinking. China has been relaxing the policy for some years, with cities like Beijing asking couples to apply for licence to have a second child. In 2013, China allowed couples nationwide to have a second child if either parent is an...

Doctors at the University of Ibadan in partnership with the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and University of Loyola, Chicago have discovered a permanent cure for Sickle Cell Anaemia. Professor of Medicine, Victor Gordeuk, who is the Director, Sickle Cell Centre, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and his colleagues, Prof. Damiano Rondelli and Prof. Bamidele Tayo, University of Loyola, Chicago claim the cure is bone marrow transplant. Critics of my revelation about Fayose can go to hell – Dogara

Image
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said those who are upset by his revelation that the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, prayed for him to become the speaker should go to hell.  The Speaker, who on his Twitter page on Tuesday was reacting to some critics who alleged that the governor might have been part of those who financed him for that position, fired back saying, “I don’t care who is hurt by this revelation. Fayose did not give me anything. He only prayed. Like him or hate him, God can use anybody. God is the giver. “He prayed before witnesses.  I won’t ‎ lie. I was rudely shocked because I never expected him to pray for me. “The truth is that so many people prayed for me and I prayed also. I am thankful to all who stood by me in prayers. “I don’t care who is hurt by the truth.  All I got when I visited Governor Fayose was prayer and nothing else.” Hon. Dogara had during “A Day with Jesus for Nigeria in Israe...

After been chosen and named the man of the match by supporters of Manchester City on Wednesday, when City beat Crystal Palace 5-1, the 19-year old Nigerian forward has shown he is serious about stamping his influence on the Man City team this term. Iheanacho started his first match for the Citizens after six substitute appearances. He started and completed 90 minutes against Palace and scored one goal whilst providing two assists. And his manager, Manuel Pellegrini, said afterwards that Iheanacho’s performance did not surprise him at all. “It was very important for Kelechi to demonstrate once again that he’s a very good player,” Pellegrini told the club’s official website. “He’s not just a striker – he provided two assists – I’m very happy for him. He has things to improve but he’s working in the correct way. “I had no doubt in him – I see how he works every day and his personality is important and it’s important for him to play with important players. Segun Odegbami withdraws from FIFA presidency race

Image
Former Nigeria International, Segun Odegbami, has withdrawn from the FIFA presidential election, as he could not secure the required backing to make him a contestant, his campaign manager said. FIFA is seeking to replace outgoing President Sepp Blatter. While FIFA is yet to come out with the official list of contestants that beat its Monday midnight deadline, the late endorsement of Odegbami by the Nigeria Football Federation contributed a great deal to his missing out on contesting for the plum position. Among other things, qualification to stand for the FIFA Presidency demands a minimum of five written endorsements from national football federations plus a declaration of a role in the game in two of the past five years. It was gathered that while the NFF made verbal pronouncement of endorsing Odegbami over the weekend, official documents to that effect were only received on Monday afternoon-hours before the deadline set by FIFA. The head of the campaign team for the Odegbami ...

The councils also ordered that vehicles should not be parked on the roads leading to the Ooni’s Palace. Those abandoned should be removed before the Ooni’s arrival.
